In Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square, Canada Day festivities unfolded under cloudy skies. Indigenous drummers were spread throughout the area, captivating the crowd clad in red and white attire. Attendee Yawn Wi, who immigrated from China, cherished the freedoms Canada offers, particularly in terms of speech and the environment. In Halifax, thick fog engulfed the historic port city, leading to the cancellation of the Canadian Forces aerobatic flight demonstration team, the Snowbirds’ performance, and the evening fireworks display. However, Halifax’s events, developed collaboratively with Indigenous communities, aimed to honor the Mi’kmaq Nation.
Halifax Residents and Indigenous Recognition
Halifax residents braved the foggy conditions to participate in Canada Day events. Ashley Augustine, a member of the Sipekne’katik First Nation, expressed delight at the program. He Further stated that it is high time Indigenous communities recognition on Canada Day. The Treaty Truckhouse, managed by Augustine, sold handmade Mi’kmaq items on the waterfront, symbolizing the growing presence of Indigenous culture. John Kenny, a Halifax resident, attended the celebrations with his family to actively engage in the festive spirit. Kenny’s partner, Mace Guarin, celebrated her second Canada Day as a Canadian citizen, expressing gratitude for the country that has provided her with a better life since immigrating from the Philippines.
