As Imran Khan, a former cricket star, had been a prominent political figure for years. The charges against him have sparked widespread reactions and debates across the country. Khan had been campaigning for early elections since his ousting as PM in April of last year. Also general elections are scheduled for later this year. Khan has faced numerous cases since being removed from power, and security forces have attempted to detain him on several occasions at his Lahore residence, but were prevented by his supporters.

Last November, Khan survived a gun attack on his convoy during a protest march. On Monday, the military warned Khan against making “baseless allegations” after he accused a senior officer of plotting to kill him once again.
